Multiple Sclerosis can be a very disheartening diagnosis. Also known as MS, this disease originates in the central nervous system. Essentially, the immune system is attacking the central nervous system when MS is present in the body.

As the immune system does its damage, there are multiple areas of scarring, also called Multiple Sclerosis, thus, the name.

  1. Clinically Isolated Syndrome

    • This is the most common indication of MS. It includes a pattern of symptoms, and then a remission period.
  3. Secondary Progressive MS

    • This type of MS presents itself when the patient experiences a gradual increase of the ailment the disease has caused. This type might still include times of remission. However, this category of MS indicates an overall worsening of the disease.
  4. Primary Progressive MS

    • This manifestation of MS does not include remission, and presents in a gradual worsening of symptoms and disabilities.

The cause of the disease remains unknown, but it seems to be both a product of environmental factors as well as genetic factors.

The disease usually presents itself in females, and typically those age 20-50 are diagnosed.

The diagnosis might seem dire, however there are many routes of treatment that can greatly improve a patient’s quality of life.

Some of these treatments include:

  1. Physical Therapy

    • Regular exercise and correct muscle usage can effectively improve an MS patient’s control over their muscles, and decrease spasms.
  2. Staying Cool

    • MS symptoms tend to worsen with heat, so staying cool is key.
  3. Eating well & Exercising

    • The most common treatment for any disease: a healthy lifestyle. This can greatly improve symptoms and increase quality of life.
  4. Resting & Lowering stress

    • Get the appropriate amount of rest! Try practicing stress-relieving activities to slow the progression of your symptoms.
